Building Snowmen At Midnight
Dec. 11th, 2008 09:53 amBuilding Snowmen at Midnight
A magnesium moon over mottled snow
Drifts piled low on neighbors' cars.
Wraps it's lunar face with grey scarves
Knitted cirrus-stitch twixt sequin-stars.
Yet play the children, young and old,
Careless in the lamplight's glow
To build a lumpy, muddy man,
To make a figure out of snow.
Pockets barren, bereft of jobs,
Saddled with the silent sorrow
Of lacking luster 'neath the tree
When Christmas comes tomorrow.
But snow has come to Texas towns,
So they, in darkness, build and play.
Jubilant the laughter pells,
For the snowman born this day.
A magnesium moon over mottled snow
Drifts sees clear the coming of the dawn
Where quick will melt the nighttime joy
Built on each mortgaged lawn.
